Question: I usually dine at 10 p.m. so I don't take any bedtime milk. I usually run a stressful life. I'm spending my days with severe mental strain, presently I have to take alprazolam (trika 0.25) to sleep at night. In this condition suddenly I started feeling week and, as per one of my doctor friend, I tested my blood which gave a fasting blood sugar level of 281. He suggested me exercise, dieting and medication (glucobay 50: acarbose group). I believe this is my chance of reducing my weight and getting thin, although I don't look heavy. Would you please suggest me what to do?Ans: See Ashis, every one goes through rough patches of life. How to over come this is more important. As your doctor rightly pointed out the general weakness is due to your diabetic state. In diabetics due to inadequate quantity or quality of insulin, carbohydrate metabolism is impaired. This lead to a state of starvation in diabetic even though their blood sugar is high since it can not be utilised. Now by doing exercise religiously your life will become organised. This will help you to regularise your sugar as well as to come out of your present mental state. About diet, reduce calorie intake. Take diet 30 kcal/kg (ideal weight).

Question: Have read in some book that dates are good for Diabetics. Do you agree?Ans: I do not agree with dates been given to diabetic patient. Dates are advised for lean constipated patients because of their laxative effect. As they are rich in calories they should be avoided by the diabetic and obese. Dried dates are a good source of calcium and iron.

Question: I am 8 months on my family way and the baby is due mid august. I have got gestational diabetics. Will that remain forever? Doctors say I might get into diabetics as I am having high blood sugar. Currently on a diet and taking 3 shots of insulin everyday for the past 2 months of pregnancy.Ans: Once your pregnancy is over, your blood sugar levels usually will return to the level that was present before you became pregnant. If you were not a diabetic before pregnancy then once you give birth your diabetic will not be there (most of the time), but you have a higher risk of getting diabetes in later life. From your treatment history you seem to be having more than mild degree of diabetics. May be your diabetics status have been unmasked during pregnancy.
