How to Make Aval Puliyodharai

  • Soak tamarind in 3/4 cup warm water for 10 minutes.
  • Extract thick juice and discard the tamarind.
  • Soak aval in tamarind extract for 10 minutes until it absorbs all the liquid and the flakes become soft, fluffy and separate.
  • Heat oil in a wide pan.
  • Add mustard seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida, red chillies, urud dal, turmeric powder.
  • When mustard seeds crackle, add aval.
  • Add salt as per taste.
  • Gently toss everything together without mashing the aval.
  • Saute for 2-3 minutes and serve it hot.
