Ingredients

  • 250 g - plain flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1/2 tsp - baking powder
  • 200 g - Butter
  • 200 g - Sugar
  • 1/2 cup - Milk
  • 1 - Egg beaten.

How to Make Basic Scone Recipe

  • Heat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  • Mix together the flour, baking powder and salt and rub in the butter. Stir in the sugar and then the milk to get a soft dough. (Use a little more milk if the dough is too stiff).
  • Turn on to a floured work surface and spread very lightly to about 3/4 inch thickness.
  • Using a small bottle lid or saucer cut out rounds and place on a baking sheet. Brush the tops of the scones with the beaten egg.
  • Bake for 12-15 mins until well risen and golden.
  • Cool on a wire rack and serve with butter.
