1 lb - bata fish (or any white-fleshed fish)

4 - medium Brinjals (cut into halves)

9-10 - spicy Urad Dal bori/vadi

1 - medium Onion (finely chopped)

1 - large Tomato (finely chopped)

3 tbsp - Mustard Seeds powder

1 tsp - panch-phoron

2 - Green chillies (slit lengthwise)

1 bunch - Coriander leaves (optional)

1 tsp - Turmeric powder

Salt to taste

Oil - as required


  1. Cut and wash the fish pieces thoroughly.
  2. Marinate with salt and a pinch of turmeric powder.
  3. Pan fry the fish pieces to a light golden brown colour on both sides. Keep aside.
  4. Pan fry urad dal bori, keep aside.
  5. In a flat-bottomed skillet, add panch foron. Once it starts to splutter, add green chillies and onion, fry till the onion turns translucent.
  6. Add brinjal and turmeric powder. Cover the lid and cook for 1-2 mins until the raw smell of the turmeric is gone.
  7. Add the chopped tomato and cook for another 2 minutes.
  8. Add 2 cups of water and salt, cover the lid and cook until it starts to boil. Add the fish pieces and cook for another 4-5 minutes.
  9. Add mustard paste (mix mustard powder with 2-3 tbsp of water and keep aside for a minimum of 10 minutes to make a paste) and urad dal bori and cook for not more than 2 minutes.
  10. Add the chopped coriander leaves (optional).
