Ingredients

  • French beans - 1/2 kg
  • Grated Coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Dry Red Chillies - 3
  • Red chillies, broken into pieces - 2 or 3
  • Curry leaves - a few
  • Tamarind juice - 2 tsp
  • Jaggery powder - 2 tsp
  • Green chillies - 2 or 3, slit
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make Beans Palya (French Beans, Karnataka Style):

    1. String the beans and chop finely.
    2. Grind red chillies, coconut and cumin coarsely.
    3. Heat oil in a kadai and add mustard.
    4. When it splutters, add broken red chillies and curry leaves.
    5. Add beans, 1/2 cup water and salt.
    6. Keep covered on low flame.
    7. When the vegetable is almost cooked, add tamarind juice, jaggery and green chillies.
    8. When the vegetable is soft and all the liquid has dried up, stir in the ground paste.
    9. Mix well and remove from fire.
