Ingredients

  • French beans - 1/2 kg
  • Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Dry red chillies - 3
  • Red chillies, broken into pieces - 2 or 3
  • Curry leaves - a few
  • Tamarind juice - 2 tsp
  • Jaggery powder - 2 tsp
  • Green chillies - 2 or 3, slit
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Beans Palya (French Beans, Karnataka Style)

  • String the beans and chop finely.
  • Grind red chillies, coconut and cumin coarsely.
  • Heat oil in a kadai and add mustard.
  • When it splutters, add broken red chillies and curry leaves.
  • Add beans, 1/2 cup water and salt.
  • Keep covered on low flame.
  • When the vegetable is almost cooked, add tamarind juice, jaggery and green chillies.
  • When the vegetable is soft and all the liquid has dried up, stir in the ground paste.
  • Mix well and remove from fire.
