Ingredients

  • 1 cup - black Channa
  • 1 - Cloves
  • 1/2 inch piece - Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp - chilli powder
  • 1/2 tbsp - Garam Masala powder/channa masala powder
  • 1 - Onion medium sized chopped lengthwise
  • 2 tsp - Ginger Garlic paste
  • 1/2 - Tomato
  • A few - Curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp - oil
  • 1/2 small size - Lemon
  • For grinding:
  • 1 medium sized - Tomato
  • 1/2 cup - Coconut grated
  • 1/2 tsp - fennel (sombu)
  • How to Make Black Channa Masala:

    1. Grind the ingredients listed with a little water to a fine, thin paste.
    2. Pressure cook channa with a pinch of turmeric powder and keep aside.
    3. In a kadai, add oil and temper with cloves and cinnamon.
    4. Add ginger garlic paste and fry for 2 mins.
    5. Add onion, half tomato, curry leaves and fry well till onions turn light brown.
    6. Add boiled channa, chilli powder, channa masala/garam masala powder and mix well.
    7. Now add the ground coconut paste, saute till all is combined.
    8. Allow it to boil and switch off when oil separates.
    9. Squeeze lemon juice while serving.
