Ingredients

  • 1 cup - whole black gram
  • Salt to taste
  • 10-12 Cloves - Garlic
  • 2 inch piece - Ginger
  • 4 - Dried red chillies
  • 2 - onions, roughly chopped
  • 2 tbsp - oil
  • 2 tbsp - Butter
  • 2 tsp - coriander powder
  • 1 tsp - cumin powder
  • 1 cup - Tomato puree
  • 1 tsp - Garam Masala powder
  • 1 tsp - chilli powder
  • 1 cup - fresh Cream
  • How to Make Black Gram Dal Pakhtooni:

    1. Soak the gram overnight.
    2. You can soak it on warm water in a casserole for a couple of hours as well.
    3. Grind garlic, ginger and red chillies with a little water to a fine paste and add it to the gram.
    4. Cover and cook the gram till soft.
    5. You can pressure cook (4-5 whistles) as well.
    6. Grind onions.
    7. Heat oil and butter in a deep non stick pan.
    8. Add onion paste and saute, stirring, till fragrant and golden.
    9. Add coriander powder and cumin powder and saute for 2-3 minutes.
    10. Add tomato puree and saute till raw smells disappear and fat surfaces.
    11. Add this masala into the cooked gram along with garam masala powder and adjust salt.
    12. Mix well and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
    13. Add red chilli powder and cream and mix well.
    14. Transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot decorated with a swirl of cream.
    15. It goes well with roti or rice.
