Pre-heat the oven to 175 degrees C (350 degrees F). Lightly butter a suitable oven proof dish.
Line the bottom of the pan with the bread. Spread well so that the bottom is covered completely.
Mix the eggs, milk, sugar, salt and vanilla together in a large bowl. Pour this egg mixture over bread. Let it stand for 10 mins till the bread soaks up almost all the mixture. Dot the top with the butter. Mix 1 tbsp sugar with 1 tsp cinnamon powder and sprinkle over the top.
Bake in preheated oven for about 25 to 30 mins or until top is nice and golden and a little crunchy.
