Ingredients

  • 1 cup - Toovar (red gram ) Dal
  • 250 g - brinjal, quartered
  • 1 cup - green mango, chopped
  • 1/2 cup - onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup - onion, sliced
  • 10 to 12 - green chillies, sliced
  • 2 tsp - coriander powder
  • 3 tbsp - oil (preferably ground nut)
  • 1 tsp - mustard
  • 1 tsp - cumin
  • 2 red chilli, broken into pieces
  • 1 tbsp - garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 tsp - Ghee, optional
  • few Curry leaves
  • salt to taste

How to Make Brinjal and Green Mango Dal

  • Cook Toovar Dal till very soft and mash well.
  • Cook brinjals with sliced onion, green chillies and coriander powder with 1 cup of water.
  • Add mango pieces, salt and cook till soft.
  • Add the Dal and enough water to get thick pouring consistency. Simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  • Heat the oil in a small Kadai or fry pan. Add mustard and cumin.
  • When they splutter, add red chillies and curry leaves. Add garlic.
  • When it turns golden brown, add onion.
  • Fry till onion is brown and add the contents to the Dal. Mix well.
  • Pour in the Ghee (optional) and serve hot with steamed rice.
