How to Make Brown Dal

  • Wash and soak the dal in 4 cups of water for 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a heavy bottomed vessel.
  • Add onions, green chillies, and ginger and saute on a low flame till the onions are a nice golden brown.
  • Add the dal along with water, curry leaves, salt, and turmeric powder.
  • Cook the dal on a low flame.
  • After the dal is three-fourth done, add tomatoes. Continue cooking till the dal is done and is a little thick in consistency.
  • Remove from gas and lightly churn the dal.
  • Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with brown rice or roti and any fried sabzi.
