Ingredients

  • 1 - chayote
  • 1 cup - red gram dal
  • 15 - pearl onion
  • 1 - tomato
  • 1 - green chilli
  • 1 - red chilli
  • small quantity - capsicum
  • 1/2 tsp - red chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp - coriander powder
  • 1 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp - sambar powder
  • a pinch - asafoetida
  • lemon size - tamarind
  • small quantity - grated/shredded coconut
  • small quantity - curry leaves
  • small quantity - coriander leaves
  • 1 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp - black gram dal
  • 1 tsp - cumin seeds
  • small quantity - fenugreek seeds
  • 1 - garlic
  • oil and ghee for frying
  • salt to taste

How to Make Chayote sambar

  • Soak tamarind in hot water for 10 minutes and extract paste from it.
  • Wash and cut vegetables into small cubes and keep it aside.
  • Wash red gram dal and add 3 cups of water, turmeric powder, asafoetida and a drop of oil and cook it in a pressure cooker.
  • Boil vegetables in cooker or microwave oven and keep it aside.
  • Meanwhile chop onions, tomatoes and green chillies, capsicum and keep other required ingredients ready.
  • Grind 2-3 pearl onions along with a little curry leaves, grated coconut, cumin seeds and garlic. Keep it aside.
  • Heat ghee in a pan/kadai, add little asafoetida, splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chilly, capsicum, curry leaves, black gram dal, fenugreek seeds, green chilly, onions, tomatoes and sprinkle a little water and fry for some time.
  • Add a little salt, red chilli powder, coriander powder, sambar powder and fry for some time.
  • Now add tamarind paste and allow it to boil for some time.
  • Add cooked dal..
  • Add vegetables and water if required.
  • Then add the grinded coconut-onion paste to it.
  • Finally add chopped coriander leaves to it.
  • Mix them well.
