Ingredients

  • Bengal gram dal - 1 cup
  • Ghee or oil - 5 tbsp
  • Onion - 1 cup, finely sliced
  • Ginger - 2 tsp, chopped
  • Green chillies - 2 slit
  • Tomato - 1/2 cup, chopped
  • Cumin powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  • Sugar - 1 tsp
  • Garam masala - 1 tsp
  • Bay leaf - 1
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Red chillies - 2, broken
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Cholar Dal (Dry)

  • Wash the dal. Add about 2.5 cup of water and soak for 1 hour.
  • Heat 3 tbsp of ghee or oil. Add onion and ginger and fry till onion is soft.
  • Add to the dal. Add green chillies. Heat (with soaking water) till it begins to boil.
  • Lower the heat and simmer gently till the dal is cooked and almost dry.
  • Add more hot water if needed while cooking.
  • Add tomato, cumin, coriander and garam masala powders. Add salt and sugar. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Heat remaining ghee or oil. Add cumin.
  • When it splutters, add bay leaf and dry chilli.
  • Fry for few seconds and add to the dal. Serve hot.
