Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups - Rice
  • 1 cup - Toor Dal
  • 2 whole Red Chillies
  • 2 Bay Leaves
  • 3-4 Cloves and peppercorns each
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp - Turmeric
  • 2 Onions (sliced lengthwise)
  • 3 tbsp - Ghee
  • 1 tbsp - chopped coriander
  • 1 tsp each of cumin and Mustard Seeds
  • 6-7 cups water
  • How to Make Choota Dal - Chawal:

    1. Wash dal and rice separately.
    2. Soak in salty water for half an hour.
    3. Heat ghee in a large saucepan, fry the onions till crisp and brown. Remove.
    4. In the same ghee, add cumin and mustard seeds, bay leaves, chilli, pepper and cloves.
    5. Add the reserved water of dal and rice. Allow to come to boil.
    6. Add dal and boil for 5 minutes.
    7. Add rice, turmeric, salt and cook on high for 10-12 minutes.
    8. Simmer and cook till the rice is done and water has evaporated.
    9. Garnish with fried onions and chopped coriander.
