Ingredients

  • 1 cup - rice
  • 1/3 cup - masoor dal (pink lentils)
  • 1/3 cup - moong dal
  • 1/3 cup - channa dal (Bengal gram)
  • 1 - red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp - coriander powder
  • 1 tsp - cumin powder
  • 1/4 cup - grated coconut
  • 4-5 cloves - garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp - garam masala
  • 1 tsp - red chilli powder
  • 2 - tomatoes, diced
  • 1/4 cup - chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 tbsp - canola or vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Daalonka Pulao (Lentil Pilaf)

  • Cook the lentils until they are quite soft.
  • Heat the oil and fry the onions until golden.
  • Add the powdered spices, garlic and coconut. Stir together.
  • Add the tomatoes and stir. Then add the rice and salt.
  • Add 2 cups of hot water. Bring to a boil, cover with a tight lid, turn the heat to medium-low and cook for 15 minutes.
  • Add the lentils and mix well.
  • Heat through. Check the salt, add coriander leaves and serve hot.
