Ingredients

  • 1 cup - Rice
  • 1/3 cup - masoor dal (pink lentils)
  • 1/3 cup - moong dal
  • 1/3 cup - Channa dal (Bengal gram)
  • 1 - red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp - coriander powder
  • 1 tsp - cumin powder
  • 1/4 cup - grated Coconut
  • 4-5 Cloves - garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp - Garam Masala
  • 1 tsp - Red Chilli powder
  • 2 - tomatoes, diced
  • 1/4 cup - chopped Coriander leaves
  • 1 tbsp - canola or vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make Daalonka Pulao (Lentil Pilaf):

    1. Cook the lentils until they are quite soft.
    2. Heat the oil and fry the onions until golden.
    3. Add the powdered spices, garlic and coconut. Stir together.
    4. Add the tomatoes and stir. Then add the rice and salt.
    5. Add 2 cups of hot water. Bring to a boil, cover with a tight lid, turn the heat to medium-low and cook for 15 minutes.
    6. Add the lentils and mix well.
    7. Heat through. Check the salt, add coriander leaves and serve hot.
