Ingredients

  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • pepper - 1/2 tsp
  • Clove 1
  • Cinnamon a small piece
  • Cardamom seeds 2
  • Onion - 1/2 cup, chopped
  • Ginger a thin slice
  • chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • chopped Tomato - 1/2 cup
  • red gram (Tovar) Dal - 1/2 cup
  • vegetable/chicken stock - 1 ltr
  • salt to taste
  • Lime juice to taste
  • Coriander leaves to garnish
  • How to Make Dal Shorba:

    1. Dry roast the first six ingredients, cool and powder.
    2. In a pressure cooker, combine all the ingredients (including the spice powder) except the salt, lime and coriander.
    3. Pressure cook for 10 minutes. Cool and blend in a mixer.
    4. Add more water or stock, if a thinner soup is desired.
    5. Add salt and heat till it begins to boil.
    6. Serve sprinkled with lime juice and garnished with a few coriander leaves.
