Ingredients

  • 1 cup - Toor Dal
  • 2 - onions, finely sliced
  • 4 - green chillies, cut in 2 lengthwise
  • 6 pods - garlic, crushed
  • 1 - ginger, shredded
  • 2 - tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp - Asafoetida
  • For Seasoning:
  • 2 tbsp - oil
  • 1/4 - tsp mustard
  • Curry leaves - a little
  • 2-3 - dry chillies
  • 1/2 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • For Garnish:
  • Finely chopped Coriander leaves - 2-3 tbsp
  • How to Make Dal Smash:

    1. Wash the dal well, soak in hot water for 45 mins.
    2. Cook with 1 tbsp oil, 3 cups water, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and chopped tomatoes till soft in a pressure cooker.
    3. Mash and keep aside.
    4. Heat oil in a pan add the mustard, curry Leaves, dry chillies, cumin
    5. When it splutters, add the chopped onion, green chillies and garlic and fry well till the onions and garlic turn golden brown, add salt
    6. Add the cooked and mashed dal, mix well
    7. Remove from heat; add the shredded ginger and finely chopped coriander leaves
