Ingredients

  • 1 cup - Toor Dal
  • 2 - onions, finely sliced
  • 4 - green chillies, cut in 2 lengthwise
  • 6 pods - garlic, crushed
  • 1 - ginger, shredded
  • 2 - tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp - Asafoetida
  • For Seasoning:
  • 2 tbsp - oil
  • 1/4 - tsp mustard
  • Curry leaves - a little
  • 2-3 - dry chillies
  • 1/2 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • For Garnish:
  • Finely chopped Coriander leaves - 2-3 tbsp

How to Make Dal Smash

  • Wash the dal well, soak in hot water for 45 mins.
  • Cook with 1 tbsp oil, 3 cups water, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and chopped tomatoes till soft in a pressure cooker.
  • Mash and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan add the mustard, curry Leaves, dry chillies, cumin
  • When it splutters, add the chopped onion, green chillies and garlic and fry well till the onions and garlic turn golden brown, add salt
  • Add the cooked and mashed dal, mix well
  • Remove from heat; add the shredded ginger and finely chopped coriander leaves
