Ingredients

  • Red gram dal - 1/2 cup
  • Bengal Gram dal - 1/2 cup
  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  • Chilli powder - 2 tsp
  • Ginger - 2 tsp, minced
  • Grated Coconut - 2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Dry Red Chillies - 4
  • Yellow Pumpkin - 1 cup, cubed
  • Brinjal - 1 cup, cubed
  • Potato - 1 cup, cubed
  • Curry Plantain - 1 cup, cubed
  • Raw papaya - 1 cup, cubed
  • Sugar - 1 tsp
  • Oil or Ghee - 1 tbsp
  • Panch phutana (cumin, mustard, fenugreek, fennel, black cumin) - 2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make Dalma:

    1. Wash both the dals.
    2. Add 5 cups of water, turmeric powder, chilli powder and ginger and boil until cooked.
    3. Meanwhile dry roast coconut and set aside.
    4. Now roast the cumin and red chillies and grind them.
    5. Add all the vegetables to the dal and cook.
    6. When half done add the salt and sugar.
    7. Cook for another 5-10 minutes.
    8. Now heat oil or ghee in a pan and add the panch phutana.
    9. When it splutters, add it to the dal and mix.
    10. Garnish with the coconut, cumin and chilli powder.
    11. Serve hot with steamed rice.
