Ingredients

  • 2 cups - cake flour
  • 2.5 tsp - baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp - salt
  • 1/2 cup - sugar
  • 1/2 cup - butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup - chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup - sliced dates, washed and dried
  • 1/2 cup - milk
  • 1 - egg
  • 1 tsp - vanilla essence

How to Make Date-Nut Slices

  • Sift the flour with the baking powder and salt.
  • Add the sugar.
  • Rub in butter with your fingertips, aerating the flour at the same time.
  • Add the dates and nuts.
  • Beat the egg, mix it with the milk and essence.
  • Make a well in the centre of the flour mixture, pour in the liquid ingredients and gradually mix into a smooth batter of stiff consistency.
  • Bake for an hour at 350 degrees F. If necessary, bake for 15 minutes longer, reducing heat to 300 degrees F.
