Ingredients

  • 200 g - yellow moong dal
  • 200 g - peas (shelled)
  • 100 g - broken wheat (dalia/lepsi)
  • 2 to 3 medium potatoes (peeled, cubed)
  • 2 medium carrots (peeled, cubed)
  • 2 to 3 onions (finely chopped)
  • 5 to 6 - garlic flakes (chopped finely)
  • 2 to 3 medium tomatoes (finely chopped)
  • 3 to 4 tbsp - ghee
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 3 to 4 cloves
  • 2 whole elaichi
  • 5 to 6 pepper whole
  • 3 green chillies (chopped)
  • 1 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp - chilli powder
  • 1 tsp - cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp - asafetida
  • 1 tbsp - fresh coriander leaves

How to Make Fada Ji Khichdi

  • Clean the moong dal and soak for at least 30 minutes.
  • Clean the, broken wheat carefully and wash 3-4 times.
  • Soak for at least 30-40 minutes.
  • In a pressure pan heat ghee.
  • Add cinnamon stick, cloves, elaichi, and stir fry.
  • Add cumin seed and asafoetida.
  • Stir fry add the chopped garlic, chillies, and chopped onions.
  • Stir fry till pink, add the chopped tomatoes and saute till soft.
  • Now add the moong dal and broken wheat. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the vegetables (carrots, potatoes, peas). Mix well.
  • Add salt to taste, turmeric powder, and chillie powder. Mix well.
  • Add 5 cups of water and pressure cook on medium flame till about 4 whistles.
  • On opening the cooker mix the Khichdi to make it soft.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander.
  • Serve hot with mango pickle, curd and papad.
