Ingredients

  • 1 loaf - bread, approx 400 g
  • 300 g - sugar
  • 1/2 litre - milk
  • 6 tbsp - condensed milk
  • 250 g - ghee or oil
  • 1/2 tsp - vanilla or rose essence
  • A few nuts such as almonds and walnuts

How to Make Fooigas (Fried Bread Sweet)

  • Cut the bread into small squares of about 1 inch.
  • Heat ghee in a pan and fry the bread pieces till golden brown.
  • Keep aside to cool.
  • Make a thick syrup of the sugar with a little water and keep aside.
  • Arrange the fried bread in a shallow dish.
  • Mix the milk, essence and condensed milk together and boil till the milk is quite thick and the quantity reduces.
  • Pour this milk over the fried bread then pour the sugar syrup.
  • Sprinkle the chopped nuts on top.
