Ingredients

  • 1 cup - toor dal
  • 15 to 20 - fenugreek seeds
  • 250 g - french beans
  • 1/2 tsp - ginger, grated
  • 1 - small tomato, chopped
  • 1 - green chilli, slit vertically
  • 1 tbsp - scraped coconut
  • 2 to 3 stalks - curry leaves
  • 2 stalks - mint leaves, chopped
  • 1 tbsp - coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp - tamarind water
  • 2 tsp - jaggery, grated
  • 1/2 tsp - cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp - asafetida powder
  • 1 tsp - coriander seed powder
  • 1 tsp - chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 2 pinches - garam masala powder
  • 2 tbsp - ghee
  • salt to taste

How to Make French Bean Dal

  • Wash and soak toor dal in water for 15 minutes.
  • After that add fenugreek seeds to washed dal.
  • Add 2-3 pinches turmeric powder.
  • Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles, till dal is very soft.
  • Remove when steam has escaped completely.
  • Beat well with a hand whisk, till dal is smooth.
  • Add a little more water if required.
  • Heat ghee in a deep pan.
  • Add seeds to splutter.
  • Add asafetida, curry leaves, tomato, chilli, ginger, mint leaves.
  • Stir and add scraped coconut, french beans and all dry masala powders.
  • Add jaggery, salt and tamarind water and stir fry for 15-20 seconds.
  • When ghee separates from the mixture, add dal.
  • Bring to a boil on a high flame. Then reduce the heat and simmer.
  • Simmer the dal till beans are fully cooked and tender.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander.
  • Serve hot with basmati rice and ghee.
