Ingredients

  • 1 cup - Toor Dal
  • 15 to 20 - Fenugreek seeds
  • 250 g - French beans
  • 1/2 tsp - ginger, grated
  • 1 - small tomato, chopped
  • 1 - green chilli, slit vertically
  • 1 tbsp - scraped Coconut
  • 2 to 3 stalks - Curry leaves
  • 2 stalks - Mint leaves, chopped
  • 1 tbsp - coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp - Tamarind water
  • 2 tsp - jaggery, grated
  • 1/2 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - Mustard Seeds
  • 1/4 tsp - asafetida powder
  • 1 tsp - Coriander seed powder
  • 1 tsp - chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 2 pinches - Garam Masala powder
  • 2 tbsp - Ghee
  • salt to taste
  • How to Make French Bean Dal:

    1. Wash and soak toor dal in water for 15 minutes.
    2. After that add fenugreek seeds to washed dal.
    3. Add 2-3 pinches turmeric powder.
    4. Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles, till dal is very soft.
    5. Remove when steam has escaped completely.
    6. Beat well with a hand whisk, till dal is smooth.
    7. Add a little more water if required.
    8. Heat ghee in a deep pan.
    9. Add seeds to splutter.
    10. Add asafetida, curry leaves, tomato, chilli, ginger, mint leaves.
    11. Stir and add scraped coconut, french beans and all dry masala powders.
    12. Add jaggery, salt and tamarind water and stir fry for 15-20 seconds.
    13. When ghee separates from the mixture, add dal.
    14. Bring to a boil on a high flame. Then reduce the heat and simmer.
    15. Simmer the dal till beans are fully cooked and tender.
    16. Garnish with chopped coriander.
    17. Serve hot with basmati rice and ghee.
