Ingredients

  • 2.25 Cups - flour
  • 1 tsp - Baking soda
  • 2/3 cup - shortening
  • 1.5 tsp - Salt
  • 1 cup - Beer
  • 1 tsp - Baking powder
  • 1.5 cup - Sugar
  • 3 - Eggs
  • 1/2 cup - Cocoa
  • 2/3 cup - Sauerkraut (chopped, rinsed, and drained)
  • For icing:
  • 1 8 oz. - Cream cheese softened
  • 1/2 cup - Confectionery sugar
  • 2 tbsp - Cream
  • 1 tsp - Vanilla

How to Make German Surprise Chocolate Cake

  • Cream butter and sugar together.
  • Add eggs one at a time.
  • Add beer and add cocoa.
  • Sift together flour, salt, and baking soda and powder.
  • Add to creamed mixture slowly, until it is mixed.
  • Fold in sauerkraut.
  • Put into a slightly greased 9 by 15 baking pan.
  • Bake for 30 to 45 mins at 375 degrees F.
  • Mix cream cheese, cream and vanilla.
  • Add sugar slowly.
  • Spread over the cake top.
