Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup - moong dal
  • 1/2 cup - toor dal
  • 4 - green tomatoes (medium sized and chopped)
  • 1 - onion (chopped)
  • 1 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp - urad dal
  • 2 - dry red chillies
  • 1/4 tsp - asafetida powder
  • 1/4 tsp - turmeric powder
  • A few sprigs - curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil as required
  • To roast and grind:
  • 1 tbsp - coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp -peppercorns
  • 1 tsp - poppy seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - flax seeds
  • 1 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp - cumin seeds
  • 3 - dry red chillies
  • 3 tbsp - desiccated coconut

How to Make Green Tomato Kootu

  • Roast and grind all the mentioned ingredients into a fine powder.
  • In a pressure cooker, add moong dal, toor dal, green tomatoes, turmeric powder, salt and enough water and cook until 3 whistles.
  • In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, urad dal, asafoetida powder, red chillies and fry.
  • Add onions, curry leaves and saute until the onions turns translucent.
  • Add the cooked dal-tomato mixture, the ground spice powder and cook for a few more minutes.
  • Serve hot with papads along with rice or with rotis and dosas.
