Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup - moong dal
  • 1/2 cup - Toor Dal
  • 4 - green Tomatoes (medium sized and chopped)
  • 1 - Onion (chopped)
  • 1 tsp - Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp - Urad Dal
  • 2 - dry Red Chillies
  • 1/4 tsp - asafetida powder
  • 1/4 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • A few sprigs - Curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil as required
  • To roast and grind:
  • 1 tbsp - Coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp -peppercorns
  • 1 tsp - Poppy Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - Flax seeds
  • 1 tsp - Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 3 - dry Red Chillies
  • 3 tbsp - desiccated Coconut
  • How to Make Green Tomato Kootu:

    1. Roast and grind all the mentioned ingredients into a fine powder.
    2. In a pressure cooker, add moong dal, toor dal, green tomatoes, turmeric powder, salt and enough water and cook until 3 whistles.
    3. In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, urad dal, asafoetida powder, red chillies and fry.
    4. Add onions, curry leaves and saute until the onions turns translucent.
    5. Add the cooked dal-tomato mixture, the ground spice powder and cook for a few more minutes.
    6. Serve hot with papads along with rice or with rotis and dosas.
