Jal Jeera is a super cool refreshing drink for hot Indian summers. It is a popular Holi drink and is an ideal option to beat the heat. 

Jal Jeera is a flavoursome drink with cooling ingredients - tamarind, cumin seeds, black salt crystals and mint leaves. It is widely recognised in northern India as a healthy appetiser because of its medicinal properties.  

Jal Jeera is an aromatic drink with a sweet, sour and spicy taste.

Ingredients

  • 100 g - tamarind
  • 5 cups - water
  • 2 tsp - cumin seeds
  • small piece - black salt crystals
  • 1 tbsp - chopped mint leaves
  • 2 green chillies
  • salt to taste

How to Make Jal Jeera

  • Soak tamarind in 1 cup warm water.
  • On a tava, lightly roast cumin seeds. Grind with black salt.
  • Put rest of the water to boil with ground cumin and black salt, mint, chillies and a little salt if necessary.
  • Squeeze out tamarind pulp, and throw away stones.
  • Mix tamarind pulp and water with jeera water. Boil for about 5 mins.
  • Cool. Strain through cloth or fine strainer. Chill.
  • If desired, add a few pieces of chopped cucumber before serving.
