Kadgi Chakko is a rich, classic side dish recipe of South Konkan region in Maharashtra. Fresh, hand-picked raw jackfruit is used to make this delicious side dish. 

The gently mashed jackfruit is cooked on a low flame with a mixture of grated coconut, chilli powder, coriander seeds, urad dal and mustard seeds. Kadgi Chakko is best served with steamed rice or chapathi.

How to Make Kadgi Chakko

  • Mash the jackfruit with hands.
  • Roast urad dal and coriander seeds in one tsp oil in a kadai.
  • Grind coconut and chilli powder together coarsely.
  • To this, add fried dal and coriander seeds and grind to a fine powder.
  • Mix this powder to the jackfruit.
  • Heat 1 tsp oil in a kadai.
  • Add mustard seeds.
  • When it splutters, add jackfruit.
  • Fry open, on low flame, stirring in between.
  • Add some salt and stir.
  • Remove from fire once cooked and serve hot with chapatti or rice.
