  • 4 - large raw crabs
  • 4 - potatoes, quartered
  • 2 - onions, ground to a paste
  • 2 - onions, halved and sliced fine
  • 1.5 tbsp - turmeric paste
  • 2 tbsp - chilli paste
  • 1 tbsp - ginger paste
  • 1/2 tsp - garlic paste
  • Bay leaves
  • Garam masala
  • Oil for frying crabs and potatoes
  • 2 tbsp - ghee
  • Salt and sugar to taste
  • 2 cups - water

How to Make Kakkra curry (crab curry)

  • Scrub crabs clean.
  • Separate claw from body and crack open.
  • Remove hard shell of crab.
  • Rub in a little turmeric and salt, and fry until light brown.
  • Keep aside.
  • In the same pan, fry the quartered potatoes only until lightly brown.
  • Keep aside.
  • In a karahi or pan, heat 2 tbsp. ghee.
  • Add bay leaves and garam masala.
  • Stir fry for a couple of minutes.
  • Add sliced onions and stir fry till brown.
  • Add all the masala pastes, salt and sugar to taste.
  • Stir and cook until masala changes colour, sprinkling with water as necessary.
  • Add 2 cups of water, the fried potatoes and crabs.
  • Cover and simmer gently until potatoes are done.
  • Sugar may be added at the same time as the water.
