Ingredients

  • dal(green gram)-150 gms
  • rawrice-150 gms
  • greenchillies-5-6(as per taste)
  • black pepper(12-15)
  • jeera(little)
  • curry leaves(little)
  • Cashewnuts 8 to 10
  • Ginger a pinch
  • salt to taste
  • ghee- 4tbsp

How to Make Kara Pongal

  • Soak raw rice in water for 5 minutes.
  • Take water in a 1/2 litre vessel and let it boil. Add the raw dal(don't fry)let it come to half- boil.
  • Add finely chopped ginger, raw rice. When it gets 3/4th cooked, add salt. Let it boil.
  • In another kadai, warm ghee. Add black pepper, jeera and curry leaves, sliced green chillies and cashew nuts.
  • Add this fried mixture to the pongal vessel. Allow to boil for 3-4min.
  • Serve this with any chutney or dal sambar.
  • If you need water for the poongal, add only hot water to it.
