Ingredients

  • 1 - Karela
  • 2 tbsp - check peas, soaked in water overnight and cooked
  • 1 tbsp - tur dal
  • Salt to taste
  • Jaggery - a little
  • 1/2 Lemon size - Tamarind juice
  • 1 tsp - rai
  • Curry leaves - a few sprigs
  • 1 tsp - Coconut oil (for vaghar)
  • How to Make Karela Kootoo:

    1. Cut the karela into small pieces and keep aside with salt sprinkled on it for 1/2 hour.
    2. Squeeze out the water and wash the karela well till all the bitter taste goes off.
    3. Cook tuvar dal in a pressure cooker.
    4. Take the tamarind juice, add jaggery, salt, haldi powder and the karela pieces and boil till the raw smell of the tamarind goes off.
    5. Roast all ingredients for the masala and add coconut after putting off the gas.
    6. Grind this masala in the mixie and add along with the boiled chick peas to the boiling mixture.
    7. Mix well.
    8. Lastly add cooked dal and mix well.
