Ingredients

  • Shredded Coconut -1/2 coconut
  • chilli powder -2 tsp
  • Coriander powder -2 tsp
  • Coriander seeds -1 tsp
  • Asafoetida -3/4 tsp
  • Turmeric powder -1/2 tsp
  • Tamarind Paste -1 tbsp
  • Toor dal -1 cup
  • Vegetables (small onions, tomato, drumstick or okra) - 2 cups
  • Mustard -1 tsp
  • Coriander leaves and curry leaves for garnishing

How to Make Kerala Style Sambar

  • Wash and cook the dal until soft.
  • Heat the pan and pour 1 tsp oil.
  • Add asafoetida, chilli powder and coriander powder and the seeds and fry them well.
  • Now add coconut and fry till the mixture is dark red in colour.
  • Wash the vegetables and boil them with turmeric powder.
  • When the vegetables are almost done add tamarind paste and allow it to boil for sometime (keep the stove in sim).
  • Now grind the coconut mixture and add mashed dal to it.
  • Add the mixture to the vegetables and let it boil for some time.
  • Add desired salt.
  • When the sambar is done, season oil with mustard and curry leaves, and add to it.
  • Finally add finely chopped coriander leaves.
