Ingredients

  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Green Gram (Moong) Dal - 1 cup
  • Coconut - 1/2
  • Ghee - 1 tbsp
  • Cashew nuts - 2 tbsp, broken into pieces
  • Oil - 4 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Cardamom - 4
  • Cinnamon - 4 pieces
  • Ginger - 1 tsp, chopped
  • Green chillies - 6 to 8, chopped
  • Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
  • Water - 6 cups
  • Sugar - 1 tbsp
  • Raisins - 2 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make Khichidi:

    1. Wash the rice and dal and drain.
    2. Ease the flesh out of coconut and cut into small pieces.
    3. Heat ghee in a small frying pan and fry cashew nuts and coconut pieces till golden brown.
    4. Set aside.
    5. Heat oil in a thick bottomed vessel.
    6. Add cumin, cardamom and cinnamon.
    7. When cumin seeds crackle, add rice, dal, ginger and green chillies.
    8. Fry for 2-3 minutes.
    9. Add water, salt and sugar.
    10. Mix well.
    11. Add fried cashew nuts, coconut and raisins.
    12. When the water begins to boil, cover the vessel with a lid and lower the heat.
    13. Let the rice and dal cook till soft.
    14. Serve hot.
