Kohlapuri chicken curry is a mouth-watering chicken curry made in Kohlapuri style. The non-vegetarian Indian recipe is very popular in Kohlapur and the same traditional recipe is followed for many years.

You can also learn how to make it in authentic Kohlapuri style at home by following our recipe guide. The chicken pieces are marinated in curd and spices. It is then fried and eventually stewed to make the chicken curry.

You also need to make a fine masala paste to flavor the chicken curry further. The ground paste is made from coconut, onion, tomato, ginger and garlic. The chicken is cooked in gravy until the oil separates. The chicken curry in Kohlapur style is ready to serve.


  • Chicken - 1 kg
  • Red Chilli powder - 2 tsp
  • Oil|- 3-4 tsp | Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Curds - 4 tsp
  • Onion - 1 (chopped)
  • Coriander powder - 2 tsp
  • Garam Masala powder - 1.5 tsp
  • Coriander for garnishing
  • Salt to taste
  • Ingredients for ground paste:
  • Dry Coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Onions - 2
  • Tomato -1
  • Ginger - 2 inches
  • Garlic - 8-10 pods
  • Roast the above in little oil and grind to fine paste.
  • How to Make Kolhapuri Chicken Curry:

    1. Marinate chicken with curd, salt and turmeric for 2 hours.
    2. In pre-heated oil, add cut onions and fry till golden brown.
    3. Add marinated chicken and keep stirring.
    4. Add one liter of warm water and cook on medium flame, till almost done.
    5. Remove and keep aside.
    6. Separately, heat oil and add ground paste, garam masala powder and add salt to taste.
    7. Keep stirring till oil starts separating from masala.
    8. Add chicken and cook till done.
    9. Garnish with coriander.
    10. Serve hot.
