Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup - green gram dal
  • 1 pinch - Turmeric powder
  • 1 big - Potato
  • 2 - carrots, chopped
  • 1/2 cup - string beans, chopped
  • 1 big - tomato, chopped
  • 1 - onion, sliced
  • 2 - green chillies, cut into big pieces
  • 1 inch - fresh ginger, finely chopped
  • Curry leaves, a few
  • 1 tbsp - Cashew nuts
  • Chopped fresh coriander leaves, for garnishing
  • 1/4 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp - cooking oil
  • 1.5 tsp - salt
  • Ingredients for grinding:
  • 2 tbsp - fresh grated Coconut
  • 1/2 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp - Cashew nuts
  • 3 - Cardamoms
  • 1 inch stick - Cinnamon
  • 6 - Cloves
  • 1/2 tsp - sambar powder

How to Make Kumbakkonam kadappa

  • Pressure cook green gram dal and turmeric powder.
  • Pressure cook potato along with the dal in a different stackable container.
  • Cook chopped carrots and chopped beans separately to avoid them becoming mushy.
  • Grind all the ingredients for grinding with a little water, into a slightly coarse paste.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds.
  • Add sliced onions, green chillies, ginger and curry leaves.
  • Saute till onions become transparent.
  • Stir in the ground paste and cook for 2 minutes.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and cooked carrots and beans.
  • Add peeled and crumbled potatoes and stir well.
  • Add the pressure cooked mushy dal and salt.
  • Simmer for a few more minutes till you get a pleasant aroma.
  • Garnish with roasted cashew nuts and fresh coriander leaves.
  • Serve with idlis or dosas.
