Ingredients

  • 1 small cup - Toor Dal
  • 1/2 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - Turmeric
  • 1 tsp - chilli powder
  • A pinch of Hing
  • 1/2 tsp - Sugar
  • 1 tbsp - oil
  • 1 - medium sized onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 - large tomato, cut into small cubes
  • Water as required
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp - coriander
  • How to Make Maharashtrian Dal:

    1. Wash the dal and cook in pressure cooker with 2 cups of water for 2 whistles.
    2. Add 1/2 cup water to the cooked dal and blend this to form a smooth paste.
    3. Heat oil in a deep pan, and add cumin and mustard seeds.
    4. Once the seeds splutter, add the finely sliced onion and fry till light brown.
    5. Add the tomato and toss for a minute, then add turmeric, chilli powder, hing, salt and sugar.
    6. Add 1 cup water to this and cover the pan.
    7. Cook on low flame till the tomatoes are cooked.
    8. Add the dal paste to this and stir continuously for 2 mins.
    9. Add water to the dal to get desired consistency.
    10. Cook on high till the dal boils.
    11. Garnish with coriander.
    12. Serve with hot rice and ghee.
