How to Make Masala Dal

  • Boil the dal and keep it aside.
  • Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a kadai. Add the mustard seeds and allow it to splutter.
  • Add the dry red chillies and onions.
  • Saute the onions.
  • Put the tomatoes in boiling water for 10 minutes.
  • Peel off the skin and cut the tomatoes into small pieces.
  • Add the tomatoes and boiled peas to the onions.
  • Add dal and one cup of water.
  • To this, add the chilli powder, turmeric powder, ginger paste, asafoetida and salt. Cook for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
