  • broken matta rice - 1 cup
  • oil - 1 tbsp
  • mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • black gram (urad) dal - 3 tsp
  • fenugreek seeds - ¼ tsp
  • crushed black pepper - ½ tsp
  • water - 1.25 cup
  • salt to taste

How to Make Matta Rice Dumplings

  • Heat oil in a kadai. Add mustard.
  • When it splutters add black gram dal and fenugreek.
  • When the dal turns brown add pepper, water and salt.
  • When the water starts boiling add rice.
  • Lower the flame and cook stirring till the mixture forms a lump.
  • When it is cool enough to handle, make lime size balls of the mixture, with a thumb in the center.
  • Steam the dumpling for 15 minutes.
  • Serve with chutney.
