Ingredients

  • salted dry fish - 100 gms
  • thick Tamarind pulp - 2 tsp
  • Tomato puree - 2 tbsp
  • black pepper Corns - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander seeds - 2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • oil - 2 tbsp
  • Red Chillies - 3 to 4, broken into pieces
  • Curry leaves few
  • Garlic - 2 tsp, minced
  • Onion - 1/2 cup, finely chopped
  • Water - 1 ltr
  • How to Make Meen Saaru (Fish Rasam):

    1. Cut dried fish into very tiny pieces.
    2. Add water and simmer till fish is cooked.
    3. Add tamarind pulp and tomato puree and simmer for 5 more minutes.
    4. Powder all the ingredients from pepper corns to mustard seeds together and combine with turmeric powder.
    5. Heat oil in a sauce pan and add chillies.
    6. Fry for few seconds.
    7. Add curry leaves, garlic and onion.
    8. Fry till onions turn light brown.
    9. Add the powdered ingredients and fry well.
    10. Add the fish mixture and simmer for 5 minutes.
    11. Taste and add salt if needed.
    12. Serve hot with steamed rice.
