Onion Coconut chutney is a lovely accompaniment for South Indian breakfast - idli or dosa. It is a common name in South Indian households, as it's usually present in the daily menu. 

This authentic Coconut Chutney can be made very easily with readily available ingredients. Freshly grated coconut, dried chillies, chopped onions, ginger, tamarind paste - all are smoothly ground into a fine paste.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups - grated coconut
  • 3/4 cups - water
  • 8 - dried chillies
  • 3 tbsp - oil
  • 1 cm piece - ginger
  • 1 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - tamarind paste
  • 1 tsp - urad dal
  • Salt, to taste
  • 3 - onions, chopped coarsely

How to Make Onion Coconut Chutney

  • Grind grated coconut, dried chillies, ginger, tamarind paste, salt and chopped onions in a blender with water until smooth.
  • Heat oil, add mustard seeds, urad dal. Fry till fragrant. Add curry leaves and onions.
  • When onions turn golden brown in colour, add in the blended mixture. When chutney comes to boiling point, transfer it to a bowl.
  • This chutney tastes good with idli or dosa.
