  • 1 - pahakai
  • 1 cup - thuvar dal (red gram dal)
  • Little tamarind, asafoetida, jaggery and salt to taste
  • For frying:
  • 1 tbsp - coconut,
  • 1 tbsp - rice
  • 1 tbsp - dhania
  • 1 tbsp - channa dal (Bengal gram dal)
  • 4 - red chillies
  • 1 tbsp - urud dal (black gram dal)

How to Make Pahakai (Karela) Pitlai

  • First fry the pahakai in oil and pour tamarind extract. Allow it to boil till the smell of tamarind goes. Fry all these in a pan. Put the coconut at last for frying.
  • After some time beat all these in a mixie and put everything into the pan along with the cooked tuvar dal.
  • In order to arrest the bitter taste of pahakai, add some lemon juice while cooking.
