Ingredients

  • 1 cup - red gram dal
  • 4 - Red Chillies
  • Lemon size - Tamarind
  • 1 - Onion (large)
  • 2 - Tomato
  • 1 tbsp - red chili powder
  • 2 tbsp - coriander powder
  • 1 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 3 flakes - Garlic (medium)
  • 1/2 cup - grated/shredded Coconut
  • small quantity - Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp - mustard
  • 1 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp - sambar powder
  • salt to taste
  • oil for frying
  • How to Make Paruppu Urundai Kuzhambu:

    1. Wash and soak red gram dal for 2 hours along with red chillies and cumin seeds.
    2. Grind them to a smooth paste. Add sambar powder, little turmeric powder, little salt.
    3. Keep it in an idly plate and steam it (for 3 minutes if kept in oven, and 10-12 minutes if kept in pressure cooker).
    4. Shape this into small balls.
    5. Heat oil in pan/kadai (preferably sesame oil), splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chilly, curry leaves, garlic flakes.
    6. Fry onions, then tomatoes and tamarind paste.
    7. Next, add red chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and little salt. Let it boil for 10 minutes.
    8. Transfer the dal balls to this Boiled kuzhambu.
    9. Finally add coconut paste to this.
    10. Paruppu urundai kuzhambu is delicious and ready to be served.
