Ingredients

  • Toor dal (boiled with 1 cup of water) - 1/2 cup
  • Fresh lime - 1 (medium size)
  • Water - 1 cup
  • Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander seeds - 1 tsp (lightly toasted)
  • Jeera seeds - 1 tsp (lightly toasted)
  • Black pepper - 1/2 tsp (lightly toasted)
  • Garlic cloves - 2-3 (slightly mashed)
  • Green chillies - 2-3 (slit)
  • Curry leaves - 8-9 (with stem)
  • Coriander stems - 3-4
  • Oil - 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Salt as per taste

How to Make Plain Lime Rasam

  • Take a saucepan and add boiled toor dal with water, 1 cup water and turmeric powder.
  • Make a powder of all toasted seeds (jeera, coriander, pepper) and add half of the powder to the toor dal mixture.
  • Add garlic, coriander stems and curry leaves.
  • Let this mixture boil on medium flame.
  • It should not be overboiled.
  • Once it boils, remove it, add the remaining powder, juice of lime and salt and stir well.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, green chillies and asafetida.
  • Add this tadka or tempering to the lime rasam.
  • Check the salt.
  • Serve this lime rasam hot with steaming rice.
