Ingredients

  • 1 cup - Rice
  • 1/4 cup - moong dal (yellow)
  • 1/4 cup - Jaggery
  • 1/4 cup - Ghee
  • 1/4 cup - Milk
  • 1 pinch - Cardamom
  • A few - roasted Cashew nuts
  • How to Make Plain Sakkarai Pongal:

    1. Clean rice and yellow moong dal. Keep it aside for 5 minutes.
    2. Add 2 cups of water for rice and 1/2 a cup of water for yellow moong dal, and cook these two separately in a pressure cooker up to 3 whistles.
    3. In a pan, add jaggery, some water and heat it, till the jaggery melts.
    4. Boil milk and keep it aside to cool.
    5. In the jaggery pan, add cooked rice and yellow moong dal.
    6. Reduce flame, mix ghee and stir.
    7. Now add cardamom and roasted cashew nuts to it.
    8. Finally add milk, for a rich taste.
    9. Hot and delicious sakkarai pongal is ready to eat.
