Ingredients

  • 1 cup - rice
  • 1/4 cup - moong dal (yellow)
  • 1/4 cup - jaggery
  • 1/4 cup - ghee
  • 1/4 cup - milk
  • 1 pinch - cardamom
  • A few - roasted cashew nuts

How to Make Plain Sakkarai Pongal

  • Clean rice and yellow moong dal. Keep it aside for 5 minutes.
  • Add 2 cups of water for rice and 1/2 a cup of water for yellow moong dal, and cook these two separately in a pressure cooker up to 3 whistles.
  • In a pan, add jaggery, some water and heat it, till the jaggery melts.
  • Boil milk and keep it aside to cool.
  • In the jaggery pan, add cooked rice and yellow moong dal.
  • Reduce flame, mix ghee and stir.
  • Now add cardamom and roasted cashew nuts to it.
  • Finally add milk, for a rich taste.
  • Hot and delicious sakkarai pongal is ready to eat.
