  • 2 medium - fish fillet, preferably pomfret, cut into half
  • 1 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp - white Mustard Seeds
  • 2 tbsp - white Poppy Seeds
  • 1 tbsp - panch phoron
  • 1 tsp - Red Chilli powder
  • 2 - green chillies, slit
  • 2 tbsp - white onion, chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Mustard or vegetable oil, as required.
  • How to Make Pomfret Macher Jhal:

    1. Marinate the fish with salt and turmeric for 15 mins.
    2. Fry the fish in hot oil.
    3. Grind mustard and poppy seeds with water to a fine paste.
    4. In the same oil, sputter panch phoron and saute 2 slit green chillies and onion.
    5. To this add, 1 tsp turmeric powder, red chilli powder and 2-3 tbsp of water and stir till dry.
    6. Add the mustard and poppy seed mixture and keep stirring till dry.
    7. Add water and let it simmer for a while.
    8. Finally add fish; cover and cook.
    9. Serve hot with rice.
