  • 1 cup - chana dal
  • 250 g - shelled and deveined small prawns
  • 1/4 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp - ground cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp - pepper powder
  • 1 tsp - garam masala
  • 4 - red chillies
  • 2 - bay leaves
  • salt to taste

How to Make Prawns in Dal

  • Wash and soak dal in water for a couple of hours.
  • Apply salt and turmeric powder on prawns and set aside for half an hour.
  • Heat 4 tbsps. oil and put in the prawns.
  • Cover tightly and cook till the prawns are dry, then keep on stirring till it turns a nice brown colour.
  • Remove from fire and set aside.
  • Cook the dal in the water in which it was soaked after adding a little turmeric powder till it is almost done.
  • Put in the prawns and all the spices with the exception of bay leaves, chillies and garam masala.
  • When the dal and the prawns are cooked, remove from fire.
  • Heat 2 tbsps. oil and put in the bay leaves and chillies after pricking them in several places and fry nicely, pour over the prawns.
  • Sprinkle garam masala on top.
  • Cover and set aside for 5 mins. before serving.
