Ingredients

  • 1 cup - Toor Dal
  • 2 medium radishes
  • 1 small Tomato (chopped)
  • 2 Green chillies
  • 1 inch - Ginger (peeled and grated)
  • 2 stalks Curry leaves
  • 1 stalk Mint leaves
  • 1 tbsp - Coriander leaves
  • 1 tsp - fresh scraped Coconut (optional)
  • 4 to 5 - kokum pods or Tamarind pieces
  • 1 tsp - Red Chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp - coriander (dhania) powder1/4 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - Fenugreek seeds
  • 3 to 4 pinches of Asafoetida
  • 1 tbsp - Ghee
  • 1 tbsp - oil
  • How to Make Radish Dal:

    1. Steam the radishes for 2-3 minutes.
    2. Cool and cut into 1/2 cm. thick round slices
    3. Add the fenugreek seeds and half of the turmeric powder.
    4. Pressure cook dal in 3 cups of water, for 4 whistles or till mushy.
    5. Let the pressure cooker cool, then remove dal. Churn dal with a buttermilk churner, till smooth.
    6. Heat oil in a deep pan or earthen cooking pot.
    7. Add all the seeds, allow to splutter. Then add asafoetida.
    8. Add ginger, chillies, coconut and stir.
    9. Add tomatoes, curry leaves, mint leaves, kokum or tamarind pieces, and stir.
    10. Add all the dry masalas, and the radish slices.
    11. Simmer for a minute, then add dal.
    12. Add 2 cups water or rice stock along with salt.
    13. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and add ghee.
    14. Simmer for 5 minutes, partially covered with a lid.
    15. Add coriander, stir well and serve.
