How to Make Radish Dal

  • Steam the radishes for 2-3 minutes.
  • Cool and cut into 1/2 cm. thick round slices
  • Add the fenugreek seeds and half of the turmeric powder.
  • Pressure cook dal in 3 cups of water, for 4 whistles or till mushy.
  • Let the pressure cooker cool, then remove dal. Churn dal with a buttermilk churner, till smooth.
  • Heat oil in a deep pan or earthen cooking pot.
  • Add all the seeds, allow to splutter. Then add asafoetida.
  • Add ginger, chillies, coconut and stir.
  • Add tomatoes, curry leaves, mint leaves, kokum or tamarind pieces, and stir.
  • Add all the dry masalas, and the radish slices.
  • Simmer for a minute, then add dal.
  • Add 2 cups water or rice stock along with salt.
  • Bring to a boil, reduce heat and add ghee.
  • Simmer for 5 minutes, partially covered with a lid.
  • Add coriander, stir well and serve.
