Ingredients

  • 1 cup - tur dal
  • 1 - drumstick (any veggies)
  • 6 - pearl onions
  • tamarind, small lemon size
  • 1 - tomato
  • 2 - green chillies
  • 1/4 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp - sambar powder
  • salt as per taste
  • 2 tsp - oil
  • 1/2 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - fenugreek seeds
  • 1 pinch of asafoetida
  • Sprig of curry leaves
  • Cilantro

How to Make Sambar

  • Pressure cook tur dal, drumstick, tomato, turmeric powder with sufficient water.
  • Soak tamarind in water.
  • Heat oil in a kadai.
  • Add mustard seeds, once it splutters, add fenugreek seeds, asafoetida, pearl onions and curry leaves.
  • Add the pressure cooked drumsticks, salt and mix well.
  • Add sambar powder, tamarind water and mix again.
  • Once it boils, add cooked and mashed tur dal.
  • Finally add cilantro and serve with hot rice.
