Ingredients

  • raw rice - 2 cup
  • bengal gram (chana) dal - ½ cup
  • red gram (thovar) dal - ½ cup
  • grated coconut - ½ cup
  • grated carrot - ½ cup
  • green chilies, minced - 1 tsp
  • curry leaves, finely chopped - 1 tbsp
  • oil - 2 tbsp
  • mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • black gram (urad) dal - 2 tsp
  • fenugreek (methi) - ½ tsp
  • salt to taste

How to Make Savory Carrot Dumplings

  • Soak rice and all the dals together for 2-3 hours.
  • Grind them together to a coarse paste using about 1 cup of water.
  • Add 2 more cups of water and salt.
  • Mix in coconut, carrot, green chilies and curry leaves.
  • Heat oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds.
  • When they splutter, add back gram dal and fenugreek.
  • Fry till dal is light brown.
  • Add the rice and dal mixture.
  • Cook stirring on medium heat till the mixture becomes a soft lump.
  • When the cooked mixture is cool enough to handle, shape it into lime size balls, with wet hands.
  • Place the balls in a steamer and steam for 15 minutes.
  • Serve hot with chutney.
