Sometimes, all you need is a simple meal at home, and what better a meal that some wonderful jeera rice and simple dal curry. So how does one go about making some simple dal curry?

Firstly, you need to wash the masoor/tur dal, about 1 cup, and cook the dal along with 3 cups of water, cumin powder, coriander powder, chilli powder, turmeric powder, and tomatoes in the pressure cooker. After the dal and veggies are cooked, mash the mixture very well, add a little more water, and salt as well, if need be.

In a separate vessel, add curry leaves, red chillies, mustard, and smashed garlic and fry them well. When the mustard seeds splutter, add in the cooked dal mixture and allow it to simmer, mixing it well. Allow it to cook for at least 20-25 minutes before garnishing it with coriander leaves and taking it off the gas. Eat it hot.

  • 1 cup - tur dal or masoor dal
  • 2 - big tomatoes, chopped
  • 3 or 4 pods - garlic, smashed
  • 2 tsp - chilli powder
  • 1 tsp - Cumins powder
  • 1 tsp - coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 2 - red chillies, broken into bits
  • A few curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp - oil
  • salt to taste

How to Make Simple dal Curry

  • Wash the dal and cook along with the tomatoes, turmeric, chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and 3 cups of water in a pressure cooker.
  • When the dal is cooked, mash well, add the salt, and a little more water, if required.
  • In another vessel heat oil and the smashed garlic, mustard, red chillies and curry leaves.
  • When the mustard splutters pour in the cooked dal and mix well.
  • Serve with rice.
