Ingredients

  • 350gms - tur dal
  • 1 medium - onion, sliced fine
  • 10 cloves - peeled and crushed garlic
  • 1/2 tsp - methi/fenugreek seeds
  • 1 tbsp - thick tamarind paste
  • 2 green chillies, cut vertically into 2
  • 1/2 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp - urad dal, split
  • 1/2 tsp - Cuminutes 8-10 - curry leaves
  • 4 red chillies
  • 1 tsp - red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tbsp - chopped, coriander leaves
  • 1/4 tsp - turmeric powder
  • Asafoetida, a pinch
  • salt
  • 2 tbsp - oil

How to Make Simple garlicky tamarind dal

  • Cook dal with methi seeds and turmeric powder in a pressure cooker for 2 to 3 whistles. Mash the dal well and keep aside.
  • Heat oil. Add turmeric powder, mustard seeds, cumin, red chilli, garlic and curry leaves.
  • Fry till seeds crackle and dal turns light brown.
  • Add onion pieces and green chillies. Fry till onion turns pink.
  • Add red chilli powder and mix well.
  • Add mashed dal, tamarind paste, salt and 150 ml water.
  • Let it boil/simmer for 3-4 minutes.
  • Sprinkle coriander and remove.
  • Serve with hot plain rice with a tsp of ghee.
