  • 1/2 cup - green gram dal
  • 1 cup - Rice
  • 2 tbsp - Ghee or clarified Butter
  • 2 tsp - Jeera
  • 1 tsp - Ginger finely chopped
  • Freshly grated Coconut - a handful
  • Green chillies - as per taste
  • salt - as per taste
  • How to Make Simple Pongal:

    1. Soak rice in water for five minutes. | Dry fry the dal on a heated tava till it gets a nice aroma and red colour. Keep it aside.
    2. Heat ghee in a pressure pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters add jeera, then chillies and ginger.
    3. Immediately add two cups of water. Simmer, add rice, coconut gratings, dry fried dal and salt. Simmer it. Close the lid and pressure cook.
    4. When the pan cols, open the lid and mix with a spoon.
    5. Enjoy with any hot pickle and yogurt while it is piping hot.
