Ingredients

  • Tamarind - 100 g
  • Seedless dates - 100 g
  • Jaggery - 150 g
  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Fennel (saunf) powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Cumins powder - 1 tsp
  • Dry ginger powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Black salt - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Sonth

  • Soak tamarind in 2 cups of water and extract the juice.
  • Chop the dates and grind to a smooth paste, using some of the tamarind extract.
  • Add the dates to the remaining extract.
  • Heat the extract in a pan and add jaggery. Cook stirring till jaggery is dissolved.
  • Increase the heat and boil till the extract thickens.
  • Remove from fire and stir in the other ingredients.
  • Serve this sweet-sour chutney with samosas, kachori or pakodas.
